Obesity is a complex chronic health condition that can lead to poorer mental health outcomes, reduced quality of life, and increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.

One-third of Americans have obesity. Costs for all of the facets of medical care for obesity total $147 billion.

Management of obesity can have a wide variety of options ranging from nutrition to physical activity to surgical interventions. 50-70 percent of adults with obesity have tried to lose weight and national guidelines recommend 10 percent weight loss, but even 5 percent has shown health benefits.

RPM Makes it Easy for Patients

Losing weight and maintaining weight loss is difficult. Connected RPM scales equip patients with support for adherence in checking their weights, visualizing trends with weight over time.

RPM removes the friction of patient compliance with daily weigh-ins, recording these numbers, and bringing them to their provider to discuss their progress with weight loss. Furthermore, the integration of the weight trend data into the provider platform allows for the health system to engage and reach out to patients who might be deviating from their weight goals.

RPM allows providers to check in with patients with the context of their weight loss and support them with a supportive educational curriculum surrounding nutrition and physical activity.

Clinical Studies Show Benefits of Digital Technology

A study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) concluded that “Weighing every day led to greater adoption of weight control behaviors and produced greater weight loss compared with weighing most days of the week. This further implicates daily weighing as an effective weight loss tool.”

Additionally, a randomized controlled trial measured the efficacy of a telemedicine-based weight loss program with video conference health coaching support. The study found that clinically significant weight loss was achieved in 69.2 percent in the intervention group versus 8 percent in the control group.
